A majority of people agree to giving the Election Commission responsibility for organising and supervising elections at all levels, according to an opinion survey by the National Institute of Development Administration, or Nida Poll. The poll was carried out on Oct 4-5 on 1,250 people aged 18 and over of various levels of education and occupations nationwide to compile their opinons on the role of the EC. Asked about the duty and responsibility of the EC, 72.96% said it should be responsible for both organising and supervising all elections to ensure fairness and justice; 15.68% said it should be responsible for supervision only; and 8.32% said the EC should be responsible for the organisation of elections only. On a proposal for the EC to be responsible for both investigation and judging of electoral fraud, 76.4% agreed; 20.8% disagreed; and the rest were uncertain. On an idea for government agencies such as the Interior, Public Health, Agriculture and Cooperatives and Education ministries to organise elections at the local level and for the EC to organise national-level elections only, 50.56% agreed; 44.64% disagreed; and, the rest had no comment.
